Texas Instruments has introduced a new series of GaN power switches

04/12/2023

Texas Instruments (TI) has introduced a new series of gallium nitride (GaN) power switches for AC-DC and DC-DC converters. The LMG362x series includes integrated drivers, protection, and current sense emulation, making it easier for designers to achieve high performance in power electronic applications.

LMG362x Series

The LMG362x series comes in three different sizes of GaN HEMT switches, the LMG3622, LMG3624, and LMG3626. The LMG3622 has a 650V120mΩ 8.5A switch, while the LMG3624 has a 650V170mΩ 6A switch, and the LMG3626 has a 650V270mΩ 3.6A switch. The LMG3622 can be programmed with a simple resistor to set the desired turn-on slew rate, and the current sense resistor can be easily calculated as well.

By using the LMG362x series, designers can achieve up to 94% system efficiency for less than 75W AC-DC applications and above 95% system efficiency for greater than 75W AC-DC applications. The bottom-side cooled 8 x 5.3mm QFN package, cycle-by-cycle over-current protection, enable pin, over-temperature protection, and slew rate control make it easier for designers to develop efficient devices.

The LMG3624 and LMG3622 also come with USB C/PD compatibility, in addition to other features. These devices are optimized for quasi-resonant fly-back, asymmetrical half-bridge flyback, inductor-inductor-converter (LLC), totem-pole power factor correction, and active clamp flyback topologies. If current sensing is not required, design engineers can use the LMG3612 and LMG3616, which are similar pad-for-pad devices.

Overall, this new series of GaN power switches from TI is an excellent addition for designers looking to improve the efficiency and performance of their AC-DC and DC-DC converters.
