ABB's Continued Success in Satellite Camera Manufacturing

07/12/2023

ABB, the Swedish-Swiss multinational corporation, has secured its third contract with GHGSat, a leader in greenhouse gas monitoring from space. The latest agreement involves the production of hyperspectral cameras for four satellites, scheduled to launch in 2024. These satellites, named C12, C13, C14, and C15, will reinforce GHGSat's existing constellation, which is dedicated to identifying and measuring industrial gas leaks from orbit.

This partnership marks the expansion of ABB's collaboration with GHGSat, as the corporation has previously constructed the payloads for ten of the company's emissions monitoring satellites. Stéphane Germain, CEO of GHGSat, expressed his confidence in ABB's technical prowess and manufacturing capabilities, emphasizing the positive results of their ongoing alliance since its initiation in 2018.

Highlighting its extensive experience in gas sensing from orbit, ABB referenced its involvement in the Canadian Space Agency SCISAT mission payload, which enabled the detailed analysis of 70 different gas types at remarkably low concentrations, reaching 'parts per trillion' from the Earth's atmosphere up to outer space. Additionally, ABB contributed hyperspectral technologies to the Japanese GOSAT program, which facilitated the comprehensive mapping of greenhouse gas sources and sinks at a global scale, commencing with the launch of the first satellite in 2009 and an enhanced version in 2018.

By securing this latest contract with GHGSat and leveraging its decades-long expertise in space-based gas monitoring, ABB continues to solidify its position as a leading provider of advanced satellite technologies for environmental monitoring and sustainability initiatives.
